The greater the temperature and the amount of water present the greater is the degree of water absorption by the polymer molecules. Moisture absorption is a reversible process and the degree of moisture absorption may be described as the degree of “moisture regain” of the polymer. Polymeric materials such as polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene and polypropylene may be processed into parts, toys, food containers and other articles, which are exposed to the environment and to water-containing atmospheres. When the parts, toys, food containers and other articles are exposed to moisture or water-containing atmospheres, the parts, toys, food containers and other articles will tend to absorb moisture and the volume of the articles will expand.
